At Ryemead pharmacy a weight management service is offered whereby a patient is individually assessed by a pharmacist. The assessment involves a blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol test. The patient’s weight and height is also measured to give a BMI (Body Mass Index) reading which can determine whether the patient’s weight is appropriate for their height. If a patient is overweight; a weight management programme is advised which includes tailor made advice on healthier eating, and exercise. The diet plan also includes advice on the main food groups e.g. fats and carbohydrates, and alcohol intake where applicable. The pharmacist will take a detailed medical history to ensure the diet plan suits a diabetic for example. For patients deemed obese from their BMI reading, the pharmacist can also supply the weight loss aid 'alli' which has proven results if an appropriate diet and exercise regime is followed.
